When economic uncertainty reigns supreme, aggressive investors know that sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Investors who can tolerate a higher degree of risk often use strategies that have the potential to actually capitalize on the volatility that usually comes along with a bear market or major correction.

The Scotia Growth S&P Plus Program ("S&P Plus") was tailor-made for the possibility of a bear market. S&P Plus features 2X leverage and can trade both long and short using inverse mutual funds. It not only has the ability to participate in rising markets, but has really knocked the lights out performance-wise in bear markets. For example:

  • In 2007, as the credit crisis and recession first took hold, the S&P Plus Strategy produced a calendar-year gain of over 52%; and

  • In 2008, the S&P Plus Strategy gained over 77%.

From its inception in August of 2004 through December 2011, S&P Plus has produced an annualized gain of over 22%. Of course, past performance can’t predict future results and outsized gains like this cannot be earned without taking on additional risk. (Be sure to read Important Notes on Page 4 of the S&P Plus Advisor Profile.)

Will the European sovereign debt crisis continue to drive the U.S. stock market? Can the U.S. government get its act together and stop the trillion-dollar deficits? Will the Fed's easy money policy and the presidential election cycle push the stock market up, or will a lackluster economic recovery send stocks crashing down again?

Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast answers to these questions – just opinions. That’s why it may be a smart move to have at least a small part of your portfolio invested in a program that has the potential to thrive on stock market volatility. Scotia’s $25,000 minimum investment makes it easy to add the diversification of a leveraged, long/short strategy with an enviable track record.
